However, there was absolutely nothing stopping the films following TFA from saying that the New Republic still existed in some form, be it in surviving fleets, planets, sectors, senators, etc.Ī nation is more than its capital, and the weird assumption TLJ makes, that everyone in the Galaxy just gives up and the Republic is gone, makes no sense at all. It was a stupid choice brought on by unimaginative and desperate writers/producers, a rushed attempt to ape the glory of the OT while misunderstanding what was good and bad about the PT. I’ll certainly agree that it was a mistake to copy ANH and the aesthetic of Rebels vs Empire so much, to make another Death Star, as well as to destroy the New Republic capital and the Senate. The weird thing about TFA is that it does and it doesn’t do that. Also Rey IS unrealistically powerful by the end of the movie. Why would Leia blow off Chewie to hug someone she has never met?)ĬONCLUSION: The Force Awakens started off intriguing and fun with a star wars feel, but becomes deeply flawed and inconsistent. Han and Finn go to save her, so the first time Leia meets Rey is when they get off the Falcon after Han's death. (She hugs a girl she has not even met - when Leia lands on Maz Kanata's Rey has already been captured by Kylo. Leia not hugging Chewie first when Han dies.

Latent force ability would explain faster reflexes but not the skill.ĪLSO DOES NOT MAKE SENSE Poe vanishing after the escape pod crashes and leaving BB-8 on Jakku with the map to Luke.

(ditto), and defeating Kylo with lightsaber moves that only a trained Jedi would know ( she has never used a lightsaber). Force pulling the lightsaber away from Kylo during the duel. and her ability to resist the mind probe (she has latent force sensitivity and Leia resists Vader's torture/mind probe in ANH).ĭOES NOT MAKE SENSE Rey utilizing a Mind Trick to escape the interrogation room ( there is nothing to indicate that she even knows this is a thing, and she would have needed training to do it).

MADE SENSE: the first part of the film, Rey's ability to fight with staff and blaster, have basic piloting and mechanical skills, and speak droid (all related to her job as a scavenger), have experience flying and doing mechanical work on the Falcon ( her junker boss owned it and had her and other scavengers attempt to repair it - could have been explained with some quick dialogue), her capture by Kylo Ren, (she initially goes down like a punk). No disrespect to any of the actors as they all did their best. So I started with TFA and made a list of what worked and what didn't. I am challenging myself to re-watch the sequel trilogy to re-evaluate my opinion on it in the name of fairness.
